On 8 August 2025, the Syrian Arab Republic faced an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures surpassing 45°C in various regions, including Rural Damascus, Hama, Aleppo, Homs, Sweida, and Daraa. This extreme weather event followed a dry summer and intensified the challenges faced by populations already impacted by conflict and displacement, many of whom reside in inadequate shelter with little protection against the heat. The Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) reported a rise in heat-related illnesses, dehydration, and deteriorating health conditions, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health issues. As of 12 August 2025, the heatwave continued, prompting national meteorological agencies to issue ongoing warnings for extreme temperatures, while SARC sought assistance to implement a targeted humanitarian response to mitigate health risks for the affected communities.
