The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme is celebrating its 53rd anniversary this month, having been established on May 22, 1973, through Decree No. 24 during General Yakubu Gowon's administration. The initiative was created in response to the challenges faced by Nigeria following the Civil War, aiming to promote national unity and integration among the youth. Since its inception, the NYSC has seen significant growth, mobilizing a total of 5,523,763 graduates from an initial cohort of 2,364 corps members. Despite ongoing security challenges in the country, the scheme continues to play a vital role in fostering community development and encouraging civic engagement among young Nigerians.
