The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has released seasonal precipitation predictions for the Desert Locust breeding areas from June to November 2026. The models indicate a progression towards El Niño conditions, which are anticipated to be among the strongest recorded, leading to drier-than-normal weather in the Horn of Africa, southern Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, and India over the next three months. Additionally, below-normal rainfall is expected across the northern Sahel, while northwestern Africa may experience above-normal precipitation. As the season progresses, gregarious spring breeding is likely to continue in Morocco and potentially extend into Algeria, with summer breeding possibly occurring in atypical areas of the Western Region, raising concerns about potential locust outbreaks starting in September.
