The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern as of May 16. As of May 20, the DRC has recorded over 670 suspected cases, 61 confirmed cases, and more than 160 deaths, while Uganda has confirmed two cases, including one fatality. The situation is particularly critical in Ituri province, where ongoing conflict, poverty, and weak health systems complicate response efforts. International Medical Corps has deployed rapid response teams to the affected regions to assist in establishing Ebola Treatment Centers and coordinating with local health authorities to enhance surveillance and infection control measures.
