The World Food Programme's recent situation report highlights the ongoing challenges of food insecurity in northern Nigeria, exacerbated by persistent insecurity and violence. In April, attacks on communities disrupted livelihoods and sustainable food production, contributing to a rise in food inflation, which reached 16.06 percent, surpassing the overall inflation rate. Humanitarian food assistance remains essential for conflict-affected populations; however, coverage has significantly declined in early 2026 due to funding and access issues, resulting in unmet needs among vulnerable groups. As a result, many households are increasingly reliant on humanitarian aid, facing depleted food stocks and rising costs of essential goods, which further diminishes their purchasing power and exacerbates food insecurity.
