Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has officially handed over its first long-acting HIV prevention project, utilizing cabotegravir (CAB-LA), to the Mozambique Ministry of Health in Beira. The initiative, which will commence this week, follows positive preliminary results from an implementation study aimed at providing CAB-LA to high-risk populations, including men who have sex with men, sex workers, and transgender individuals. This injectable treatment, administered every two months, offers a discreet alternative to daily oral PrEP, addressing barriers such as stigma and mobility challenges. MSF will donate 675 doses of CAB-LA and provide training to ensure the effective continuation of this vital HIV prevention method within the public health system in Beira.
