The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern regarding the Ebola outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda on May 17, 2026. This outbreak, the 17th of its kind in DRC, has been complicated by ongoing armed conflict and significant population displacement, particularly in Ituri Province, where over 921,000 internally displaced persons have been recorded. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is collaborating with governments and partners to enhance national capacities in DRC, Uganda, and other at-risk nations, focusing on prevention and response strategies at points of entry and along mobility corridors. The WHO has identified DRC, Uganda, South Sudan, Burundi, and Rwanda as Priority 1 countries for outbreak readiness and response efforts.
