The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has expressed profound sorrow over the deaths of three volunteers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo Red Cross (DRC RC) in Ituri Province. The volunteers, Alikana Udumusi Augustin, Sezabo Katanabo, and Ajiko Chandiru Viviane, are believed to have contracted the Ebola virus while performing dead body management activities on March 27, during a humanitarian mission that was not related to the Ebola outbreak, which had not yet been identified at that time. Their deaths occurred between May 5 and May 16, and they are recognized as some of the first known victims of the outbreak. The IFRC, alongside the DRC Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting affected communities and enhancing response efforts to the ongoing outbreak.
