The Famine Early Warning System Network has reported that Guatemala is facing significant food insecurity challenges from April to September 2026, particularly in the Dry Corridor, Alta Verapaz, and the Western Highlands. The poorest households in these regions are expected to enter an early lean season, classified as Crisis (IPC Phase 3), due to consecutive years of crop failures that have heightened their reliance on market purchases for food. This reliance surpasses their financial capacity, compelling many to adopt negative coping strategies, including incurring atypical debt and reducing food intake. Additionally, while other areas of the country will experience Stressed (IPC Phase 2) food insecurity, the depletion of food reserves and a decline in agricultural labor opportunities will lead to an increasing number of households falling into Crisis (IPC Phase 3) starting in May, exacerbated by adverse weather conditions and rising transportation costs.
