In response to the severe floods that impacted Mozambique in early 2026, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has developed a comprehensive Floods Recovery Plan for the period of 2026 to 2031. The floods caused extensive damage to the country's agrifood systems, particularly in the provinces of Gaza and Maputo, where rural families faced significant losses in crops, livestock, and fisheries. The total estimated damages and losses amount to MZN 30.4 billion (approximately USD 486 million), with the crop sector suffering the majority of the impact. The recovery plan aims to address the immediate destruction of productive assets and restore local food supply chains, while also enhancing resilience to future disasters.
