In May 2026, Afghanistan experienced severe flash floods following heavy rainfall, impacting numerous provinces including Helmand, Herat, and Kabul. The Afghan Red Crescent Society reported that over 1,587 families were affected, with 37 fatalities and 27 injuries, alongside four individuals reported missing. Significant damage occurred to shelters, with nearly 1,600 houses either partially or completely destroyed, and the floods also devastated agricultural land, resulting in the loss of 767 livestock and damage to approximately 2,754 jeribs of farmland. Humanitarian organizations are currently assessing the situation and prioritizing needs such as emergency shelter, food assistance, and support for agricultural recovery, while communities remain at risk of further flooding due to ongoing weather conditions.
