The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has recognized the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, as a pivotal development for Nigeria's economy, effectively ending the country's longstanding reliance on imported refined petroleum products. Since its operational ramp-up in May 2023, the refinery has significantly improved the domestic fuel market, meeting nearly 80% of local petrol demand and contributing to a reduction in import dependence. This shift has not only enhanced fuel availability but also strengthened Nigeria's balance of payments by decreasing outflows for imports and facilitating exports of refined products. The EIU anticipates that as the refinery approaches full capacity and plans for future expansions are realized, it will further bolster Nigeria's economic growth and foreign exchange earnings, while also positioning the country as a potential refining hub for Africa.
