A federal high court in Abuja has mandated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revise its timetable for the 2027 general election due to inconsistencies with the Electoral Act 2026. In a ruling delivered by Judge James Omotosho, the court emphasized that while INEC possesses the authority to create and modify election timetables, such actions must adhere strictly to the legal timeframes established in the Electoral Act. The court declared the deadlines set by INEC for the submission of nomination forms as void, stating they violated the statutory periods for candidate substitutions and submissions outlined in the Act. INEC has since filed an appeal against the ruling and requested a stay of execution.
