A report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom has revealed that approximately 30,000 armed Fulani militants are active across Nigeria, operating in groups of varying sizes. These militants have been identified as significant contributors to the ongoing insecurity in the country, particularly in the Middle Belt and Southern regions, where their actions have resulted in thousands of deaths and widespread displacement. The report highlights that attacks by these militants often target Christian communities, although Muslim populations have also been affected, with incidents of violence escalating during religious holidays to maximize psychological impact. The commission criticized the response of federal and state authorities to these violent incidents, noting that security forces have been slow to act and have faced accusations of bias in their operations.
