On May 15, 2026, the Ministry of Health in Uganda confirmed an outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (BEVD) following the death of a 59-year-old Congolese male patient at Kibuli Muslim Hospital in Kampala. The patient, who exhibited severe symptoms including respiratory distress and bleeding, was admitted on May 11 and succumbed to the illness on May 14. Subsequent testing of a sample taken after his death confirmed the presence of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus. In response, the Ugandan government has mobilized screening and rapid response teams at border points with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, established a mobile laboratory in Bwera Hospital, and initiated isolation and infection control measures, including the quarantine of individuals who had contact with the deceased.
