The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has apprehended a mother and daughter duo, Urowhe Diana, aged 39, and her 22-year-old daughter, Rokibat Oluwasheyi Imoru, in connection with a romance scam that allegedly defrauded a victim in Malta of over N18 million. According to a statement from the Acting Police Public Liaison Officer, DSP Unwana Imah, preliminary investigations indicated that Emmanuel Amanfo, a Lagos resident currently at large and identified as Rokibat’s stepfather, conspired with her to establish and manage multiple bank accounts for fraudulent purposes. The investigation revealed that the proceeds from the scam were funneled through various money transfer operators and deposited into accounts owned by Rokibat, before being transferred to an Ecobank account held by Urowhe Diana, where the funds were reportedly utilized. The police are continuing their investigation into the case, which involves allegations of computer-related fraud, identity theft, and money laundering, and have expressed their commitment to tackling cybercrime in Nigeria.
