Governor Seyi Makinde has publicly criticized President Bola Tinubu for what he perceives as a lack of urgency in establishing state police, particularly in light of rising insecurity in Nigeria. Speaking in Ibadan, Makinde emphasized that the responsibility for creating state police should lie with state assemblies rather than the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu. He highlighted the recent mass abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State as a pressing example of the need for enhanced local security measures. The governor also referenced the establishment of Amotekun, a regional security outfit, as a temporary solution to the absence of state police, noting that all South-West state assemblies, except Lagos, had passed legislation to support its creation.
