Dr. Jeffrey Samuel, a clinical pharmacist and regional director for Africa at Direct Relief, provided insights into the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). As the first cases were reported this month, Dr. Samuel was in Uganda, where he noted the importance of sustained healthcare support in managing such emergencies. Direct Relief has allocated $2.5 million in emergency medical assistance to the DRC to aid in containment and treatment efforts. He emphasized that effective Ebola response requires a combination of routine healthcare support and emergency measures, highlighting the need for strong health systems to ensure the delivery of essential services even during outbreaks.
