The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action to secure the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oyo State, issuing a 24-hour ultimatum for their safe return. The abduction occurred on May 16, 2026, when armed assailants targeted school communities in the Ahoro-Esinle area of Oriire Local Government, resulting in the kidnapping of numerous pupils and educators. HURIWA expressed concern over the government's perceived slow response to the crisis, highlighting the ongoing suffering of the victims while the President celebrated the Sallah holiday with his family. The organization emphasized the constitutional obligation of the government to protect its citizens and supported protests by affected families and civil society groups, while criticizing the responses of labor unions regarding the incident.
