The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, revealed that state governors were apprehensive prior to President Bola Tinubu's removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023. During a meeting with the President and fellow governors in Lagos, he recounted the heightened anxiety that led to the deployment of security forces and preparations for potential riots that ultimately did not materialize. AbdulRazaq explained that the governors were first informed of the impending subsidy removal while on a trip to China, prompting emergency discussions among them to persuade the President against the policy. Despite their concerns and preparations for unrest, the announcement did not lead to the anticipated protests, which AbdulRazaq attributed to the unexpected nature of the decision and its subsequent positive impact on state finances.
