The economic impact of tobacco consumption in Nigeria has reached approximately N211.2 billion each year, which includes both direct healthcare expenses and indirect costs associated with illness and premature mortality. Emmanuel Onwuka, the Communication Officer of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA), provided this information during a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar. This figure underscores the significant financial strain that tobacco use imposes on the nation's healthcare system and economy. The announcement coincides with global efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, particularly on World No Tobacco Day.
