During the week of May 18, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) engaged with local authorities in Romania to secure the continued accommodation of 45 Ukrainian refugees in a municipal center, addressing the lack of a legislative framework for their extended stay. The municipality agreed to allow these residents to remain under the condition that they cover utility costs, while UNHCR emphasized the need for protective measures for vulnerable individuals and proposed alternative accommodation solutions. Additionally, from May 27 to 28, UNHCR conducted a training session in Iași for approximately 30 border officers, focusing on the EU Screening Regulation to enhance their ability to identify individuals with specific protection needs. On May 29, UNHCR celebrated International Children’s Day at its Community Centre in Bucharest, hosting over 150 children from refugee and host communities in activities designed to promote social cohesion and children's rights, supported by various local partners.
