The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its humanitarian partners have issued a plea to the global community to remember the plight of approximately 1.2 million Rohingya refugees currently residing in Bangladesh, particularly in the Cox’s Bazar camps. This year marks nine years since the mass exodus of Rohingya individuals from Myanmar, with the largest influx occurring in August 2017 when around 750,000 refugees fled violence in their homeland. The UNHCR emphasized the critical need for renewed international support, highlighting an appeal for $710.5 million to address urgent humanitarian needs, which is 26 percent lower than last year’s request. As conditions remain dire, particularly for vulnerable groups, the UNHCR underscored the importance of continued humanitarian assistance and the necessity for safe and dignified return options for the refugees.
