In Akwa Ibom State, a total of 99 individuals have been convicted and sentenced for rape offenses between 2020 and 2025, following the implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law. Barr. Emem Ette, the Director of the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Department and Secretary of the Akwa Ibom State GBV Management Committee, made this announcement during a recent press briefing. The VAPP Law aims to provide comprehensive legal protection against various forms of gender-based violence, contributing to the state's efforts in combating such crimes. The enforcement of this legislation has led to increased accountability and legal repercussions for perpetrators of sexual violence in the region.
