The Famine Early Warning System Network has reported that the early lean season in Ethiopia has seen a surge in food prices, significantly impacting food access for many households, particularly in conflict-affected regions. While the recent belg rainfall has improved conditions in belg-receiving areas, allowing for crop cultivation and labor opportunities, widespread Crisis (IPC Phase 3) food security outcomes persist in many other regions, including northern Amhara and Tigray, where ongoing conflict has exacerbated displacement and disrupted trade. The report highlights that staple food prices have risen sharply, with annual food inflation reaching 13.5 percent in April, driven by increased fuel costs and seasonal supply tightening. Additionally, forecasts indicate below-average rainfall for the upcoming kiremt season, raising concerns about potential agricultural productivity and food availability in the coming months.
