In September 2025, the Social Protection and Disabilities Division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Tonga, in collaboration with the World Food Programme's Pacific Multi-country Office, conducted a research survey aimed at understanding the experiences of persons with disabilities during disasters and emergencies. The survey focused on various aspects, including the preparedness and response strategies of individuals with disabilities in the face of natural disasters, the specific challenges and burdens they encounter, and their access to social protection systems. Additionally, the research explored the role of cash assistance in enhancing their coping strategies and facilitating recovery efforts. This initiative aligns with the Government of Tonga's commitment to addressing the unique needs of people with disabilities in disaster management.
