The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has reported that Sudan is experiencing one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally, with approximately 19.5 million individuals, or 41 percent of the population, facing high levels of acute food insecurity as of May 2026. Among those affected, 135,000 people are classified in IPC Phase 5, indicating a catastrophic situation marked by extreme food shortages, starvation, and high rates of malnutrition. Additionally, over 5 million individuals are categorized in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency), while 14 million are in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis). The report highlights the potential for further deterioration during the upcoming lean season, particularly in areas of North Darfur, South Darfur, and South Kordofan, where the risk of famine looms if conflict escalates and access to essential resources continues to decline.
