Dr. Olawale Fasanya, the former Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), shared insights into his career transition during the launch of his autobiography, "Cradle to Saddle," in Abuja. He recounted the skepticism he faced from peers when he chose to resign from a lucrative position at the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), where he earned approximately N1.2 million monthly, to accept a role at SMEDAN with a significantly lower salary of less than N300,000. Fasanya emphasized that his decision was driven by a desire for meaningful engagement and impact within the agency, rather than financial gain, stating that he felt unfulfilled in his previous role as he was relegated to a figurehead position. His commitment to SMEDAN, where he was the first employee, ultimately led to his appointment as Director-General by former President Muhammadu Buhari in June 2022, a move that was praised by various dignitaries at the event, including Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda.
