The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is enhancing its support for countries throughout the Americas to bolster preparedness against Ebola, following the World Health Organization's (WHO) declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern due to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Although no cases have been reported in the Americas and the risk remains low, PAHO has activated its Incident Management System to coordinate regional efforts aimed at strengthening surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, and infection control measures. A recent technical session convened by PAHO gathered 394 participants from 30 countries to discuss key preparedness actions, including laboratory diagnosis and safe burial practices, while further sessions are planned to facilitate international collaboration and technical support. PAHO is also providing guidance on the safe handling of potentially infected samples and is preparing shipments of essential materials to enhance diagnostic capacity in selected countries.
