The Famine Early Warning System Network has reported that the 2026 rainy season in West Africa is commencing normally, with rainfall levels in bimodal areas ranging from average to above-average. The Intertropical Front (ITF) has been migrating northward since early March, currently positioned between 13.5° and 14.9° north, which is slightly above its climatological average. While countries in the Gulf of Guinea have experienced significant rainfall, accumulating up to 300 mm, the Sahelian region has seen much lower totals, with less than 75 mm recorded as the season begins there. Climate forecasts suggest a likelihood of above-normal temperatures and varied rainfall patterns across West Africa from June to September.
