Afghanistan climate crisis deepens as communities scale up environmental action

As Afghanistan observes World Environment Day, the country faces escalating climate and environmental challenges that threaten the livelihoods and food security of its population. Drought and water scarcity are the most pressing issues, affecting over half of the population, particularly in rural areas where agriculture is vital. Farmers in provinces like Nangarhar report crop failures due to unpredictable water sources, while southern provinces experience severe water shortages and competition for dwindling resources. In response to these challenges, communities are implementing various environmental initiatives, including improved irrigation methods and sustainable water management practices, with support from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to enhance climate awareness and promote resilience.
