The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have initiated the USD 87 million Boosting Agrifood Systems Resilience in Sudan (BOOST) project, which aims to enhance food systems and support farmers in key agricultural regions. Launched on May 22 at AfDB’s East Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, this four-year initiative will focus on improving agricultural productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, and strengthening market connections for farming communities in Sennar State and Blue Nile State. The project is expected to benefit over 230,000 farming households, enabling them to produce nearly 1 million metric tons of cereals and pulses, sufficient to meet the annual consumption needs of millions of people. BOOST represents a strategic shift towards bolstering local food production amidst ongoing humanitarian challenges, building on previous successful initiatives in the region.
