Nigerians in major urban centers are facing significant challenges due to a sharp rise in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), with retail prices soaring to N2,400 per kilogram in some locations. This increase has exacerbated the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, compelling many families to revert to traditional cooking methods such as firewood and charcoal as they struggle to afford cleaner alternatives. While official filling stations in cities like Ibadan offer LPG at prices ranging from N1,650 to N1,900 per kg, neighborhood retailers are charging considerably more, leading to reports of consumers paying over N2,000 per kg. The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers has raised concerns that these escalating prices could result in shortages and public discontent, further complicating efforts to promote cleaner energy solutions amidst rising operational costs.
