On 15 May 2026, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared an outbreak of Bundibugyo Virus Disease (BVD), linked to the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain. This outbreak, which originated in Ituri Province, has resulted in a rising number of suspected cases and fatalities, with confirmed instances also reported in Uganda, including the capital, Kampala. Given the high volume of cross-border movement and the proximity to affected areas, Rwanda is at significant risk for Ebola importation, particularly in districts such as Rubavu, Rusizi, and the City of Kigali. In response to the outbreak, the Rwanda Red Cross Society, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other partners, is enhancing preparedness measures through volunteer training, community alert systems, and surveillance efforts to ensure a swift response if Ebola cases arise within the country.
