Abbas: Nigeria Needs Modern Data System to Achieve $1tn Economy

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, emphasized the necessity of a modern statistical framework for Nigeria to realize its goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy. During a public hearing on the proposed Statistics Bill, 2025, he highlighted that the new legislation aims to repeal the outdated Statistics Act of 2007 and establish a robust legal structure to enhance the capabilities of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Abbas, represented by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, argued that accurate data is crucial for effective national planning and policy formulation. The proposed bill seeks to modernize Nigeria's statistical system through digital data collection, improved inter-agency coordination, and alignment with international standards, with support from Statistician-General Adeyemi Adeniran, who noted the need for a stronger legal framework to address contemporary data challenges.
