The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has released a study detailing the potential for Ukraine to recover approximately 8.2 million tonnes of secondary raw materials from debris generated by the ongoing war. Conducted with support from the Government of Japan and in collaboration with the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, the feasibility study indicates that around 17.2 million tonnes of debris have accumulated in government-controlled areas, with 11.7 million tonnes still requiring processing. The research outlines that up to 70 percent of this remaining debris could be recycled for reconstruction purposes, identifying 50 construction products that could be produced from the recycled materials. The study emphasizes the necessity of private sector involvement and market incentives to establish a sustainable debris recycling system, while also recommending regulatory changes and infrastructure investments for the years 2026 to 2028.
