The Borno State Ministry of Health, with support from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is addressing a significant increase in suspected cholera cases, which has seen over 7,850 individuals affected since early May 2026. The surge has placed immense pressure on local health facilities, necessitating the expansion of a Cholera Treatment Centre in Maiduguri from 121 to 271 beds to accommodate the rising number of patients. As of June 7, MSF reported treating 7,439 patients, with a peak of over 500 admissions in a single day on June 5. In addition to direct patient care, MSF is enhancing the overall response through training healthcare workers, establishing oral rehydration points, and improving water and sanitation conditions in affected areas.
