On 15 May 2026, an outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (BVD) was officially declared by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in Ituri Province, which was soon followed by a similar declaration from Uganda. The World Health Organization has recognized the outbreak as a significant public health concern due to its potential for regional transmission, particularly affecting neighboring countries like Burundi. As of 28 May 2026, over 1,000 suspected cases and 220 deaths have been reported in the DRC and Uganda, raising alarms about the risk of disease importation into Burundi. In response, the Government of Burundi, alongside health partners, has developed a National Ebola Preparedness and Response Plan to mitigate the risks associated with the outbreak and safeguard public health.
