Afghanistan faces ‘lost generation of talent and potential,’ Security Council hears

During a recent briefing to the United Nations Security Council, Georgette Gagnon, the UN Deputy Special Representative leading the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), highlighted the increasing difficulties faced by Afghan communities. She reported that her visits across the country revealed a pervasive sense of hardship among the population. Gagnon observed that the de facto authorities in Afghanistan have established significant control over both territory and administration, facing little to no substantial armed or political opposition. However, she cautioned that this perceived stability could lead to a "lost generation of talent and potential" if the current conditions persist.
