The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a statement criticizing the Bola Tinubu administration for its perceived failure to uphold the democratic principles associated with the June 12 struggle. Marking Democracy Day, the faction's national publicity secretary, Ini Ememobong, emphasized that the lessons from the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which is considered a pivotal moment in Nigeria's democratic history, have not been learned under the current government. The statement highlighted incidents of security forces dispersing peaceful protesters in Abuja on Democracy Day as indicative of a diminishing democratic space, further asserting that the administration prioritizes public relations over substantive governance. The faction called on Nigerians to remain vigilant as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, urging citizens to actively engage in the protection of democratic rights and civil liberties.
