As of 28 May 2026, assessments conducted by the UN Country Team in Papua New Guinea have revealed that Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila has impacted over 143,000 individuals across 279 wards in 29 Local Level Governments (LLGs) within 10 districts and 5 provinces. Among those affected, more than 127,000 people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, with 55 fatalities reported. The primary needs identified include food, shelter, non-food items (NFIs), water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health services, and support for isolated communities. The ongoing multi-sector response is hindered by various challenges, including adverse sea conditions, limited access to remote areas, high logistics costs, communication issues, transportation delays, and insufficient funding for effective deployment and distribution efforts.
