On May 15, 2026, a violent attack by terrorists on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State resulted in the abduction of 39 pupils and students, alongside seven teachers, during school hours. Tragically, one teacher was killed, and another pupil died while in captivity, leading to widespread concern among residents and prompting protests from teachers over the escalating insecurity in the South West region. In response, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, urged traditional rulers to harness their ancestral powers to combat the growing threat of banditry and kidnapping, emphasizing the need for collective action to restore peace. While some residents expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of traditional powers in modern security challenges, traditional leaders and practitioners affirmed their readiness to utilize these ancestral methods, contingent upon government support, to safeguard their communities from ongoing violence.
