During a lecture titled "June 12 and Beyond" held in Akure, Ondo State, Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole stated that the late MKO Abiola refused to sell his presidential mandate to former military Head of State Sani Abacha. Oshiomhole recounted a meeting in Abuja with Abacha after the June 12 election was annulled, where Abacha expressed a willingness to negotiate but could not accept Abiola's self-proclamation as President. He emphasized that despite significant pressure from government officials, Abiola remained steadfast in his commitment to the mandate given to him by the Nigerian people. Oshiomhole also highlighted Abiola's bravery and dedication to national unity, urging young Nigerians to draw lessons from the events of June 12, while also noting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to constitutional amendments aimed at establishing state police forces.
