The Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak continues to escalate in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, with the latest data indicating significant community transmission. As of June 7, 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported a total of 550 confirmed cases and 101 deaths across three provinces, with Ituri Province being the most affected. In Uganda, the outbreak is linked to infections from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a total of 20 cases reported, including three deaths, and a significant number of healthcare workers among those infected. Response efforts are hampered by security challenges, including attacks on response teams, which have disrupted surveillance and safe burial operations in the affected areas.
