In March 2026, escalating conflict in Akobo County, South Sudan, triggered significant population movements into the Gambella region of Ethiopia, particularly affecting Akobo woreda. Reports from the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) indicate that the number of displaced individuals surged from over 112,500 in April to approximately 125,000 by May, with many residing in precarious conditions along the Pibor riverbank without formal shelter. Additionally, around 12,218 new arrivals were noted to have moved to the UNHCR-established Tormorok Camp but faced challenges in accommodation and registration, leading many to return to Akobo. Humanitarian access remains severely constrained, with the National Society being the primary organization able to provide assistance, highlighting an urgent need for increased humanitarian support to address the rising and unmet needs of the displaced population.
