As of the end of May 2026, the humanitarian situation in Myanmar remains dire, with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees reporting that 3.8 million individuals are internally displaced and 1.62 million are classified as refugees and asylum-seekers. The ongoing conflict, coupled with severe human rights violations, has led to repeated displacements and has been exacerbated by natural disasters, including Cyclone Mocha and Typhoon Yagi. The prospects for safe and voluntary returns for refugees, particularly the 1.3 million Rohingya, appear increasingly bleak. In response to the escalating crisis, UNHCR is implementing a Route-Based Approach aimed at enhancing early access to protection and solutions for refugees, while calling on regional states to improve coordination and rescue efforts to safeguard lives at sea.
