The Kogi State Government has instituted a ban on extravagant graduation and sign-out ceremonies in nursery, primary, and secondary schools, citing the financial strain these events impose on parents and their potential to foster social vices. This directive was communicated by the State Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, during a meeting with education stakeholders in Lokoja, and it takes effect immediately. The government has specified that the only acceptable event for basic and secondary education will now be the Annual Speech and Prize-Giving Day. Additionally, the use of textbooks as workbooks has been prohibited, with parents required to provide separate notebooks for classwork and assignments, ensuring textbooks can be reused by siblings.
