Bruno Lemarquis has officially taken on his role as the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Resident Coordinator, and Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, effective June 16, 2026. His appointment, made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, follows the tenure of Indrika Ratwatte. In this capacity, Lemarquis will oversee the coordination of all UN agencies, funds, and programs operating within Afghanistan, leading the development efforts of the integrated United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). With extensive experience in various leadership roles across the UN system, including his recent position in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lemarquis brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new assignment.
