At a recent UN meeting in New York, Syria’s Minister of Social Affairs, Hind Kabawat, addressed the pressing issue of disabilities resulting from the ongoing conflict in the country. She highlighted that over 1.5 million Syrians, nearly 28 percent of the population, are living with disabilities, a figure significantly higher than the global average. Kabawat urged international partners to enhance support for rehabilitation and disability rights programs, emphasizing the urgent need for a national disability strategy that includes accessible education and trained personnel. Human Rights Watch reports have documented the challenges faced by children with disabilities in Syria, including exclusion from educational opportunities and inadequate humanitarian aid, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive policy changes and international collaboration to address these critical issues.
