Secondus Slams Court Order Deregistering ADC, Four Other Parties

Uche Secondus, the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed serious concerns regarding a recent Federal High Court ruling that ordered the deregistration of five political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The court, led by Justice Peter Lifu, determined that these parties did not fulfill the constitutional requirements necessary for their continued registration, a decision Secondus argues threatens Nigeria's multi-party democracy. In a statement from Abuja, he emphasized that the ruling could diminish political participation and weaken democratic competition, asserting that smaller parties play a crucial role in providing citizens with alternative political options. Additionally, he criticized the timing of the deregistration, claiming it disenfranchises voters and disrupts the political landscape, while the Court of Appeal has since issued a stay of execution on the judgment as appeals from the affected parties are underway.
